If you are interested in obtaining a Boat License
There are normally a few steps to complete successfully
Keep in mind once you have your boat license it is for life
Unless your medical condition deteriorates
Or you break the rules and lose your license
Ok so where do you start
There is a Medical Questionnaire
You must answer this honestly If you have any doubts please see your doctor prior to attending the course
To be honest I think you should find a friend or family member with a vessel
Get involved in operating and managing vessels to see if boating is for you
This will also give you an advantage when you actually come along for your assessment
Plus give you a much higher chance of being successful
Next step study and more study
Being at sea is far more complicated than driving your car on a road
You need to be ready for the 50 question multiple choice question that must be completed and achieve 100%
This must be completed prior to heading out on the water for the practical training and assessment
The Trainer / Assessor will brief you on the skills and safety aspects of being on the water
Once underway the Trainer will demonstrate the skills that you will need to successfully complete
Then it is your turn to have a practice run at the skills
Finally the Assessment phase where the trainer will ask you to demonstrate the skills successfully without any intervention unless there is a safety issue
Upon your successful completion of all Practical Skills and Administration Requirements
We will issue you with a Statement of Competency valid for 6 months only
You cannot use this to get out on the water this is NOT a license
You need to take this to Queensland Transport
They are the organisation that issues the license for a fee
Now you are ready to get out on the ocean and start your learning journey
Boating takes many years of practice and knowledge built with experience
Consider this a long journey and a safe journey
Many boaters become rude aggressive and impatient particularly at the boat ramps
Do not become one of them they are unsafe boaters putting others at risk and should have their licenses revoked
Be patient be calm be knowledgeable ensure you have all the safety gear and more than you think you require you are on your own do not forget to join VMR or the Coast Guard
If you are not sure about the weather simply do not go there will be another day
